What is SCRYR?
SCRYR is a free live wallpaper app for macOS and Windows with a curated library of 159+ handcrafted 4K loops by BIG VISUAL CHILL. You can also use any of your own video files as a live wallpaper at no cost. See the FAQ below for pricing, system requirements, and how SCRYR compares to other live wallpaper apps.
FAQ
Is SCRYR free?
Yes. SCRYR is free to download and includes free live wallpapers from the BIG VISUAL CHILL library. You can also use any of your own video files at no cost. Subscribe for $3.95/month to unlock the full library, or purchase individual live wallpapers inside the app.
What are the system requirements?
macOS 13 (Ventura) or later, or Windows 10/11. A GPU that supports hardware video decoding is recommended for best performance.
Can I use my own videos?
Yes. SCRYR supports any video file your system can play. Drag a video onto the app or use the file picker to set it as your wallpaper.
Will it slow down my computer?
SCRYR is built to stay out of your way. It uses hardware video decoding to keep CPU usage minimal, and automatically pauses playback when a fullscreen application is active.
Does it support multiple monitors?
Yes. Everyone can play a single live wallpaper across all connected displays. Subscribers can set a different live wallpaper on each display.
Does running live wallpapers on multiple displays affect performance?
Each display decodes its own video stream, so two displays roughly double the GPU work compared to one. On modern hardware with dedicated video decoding (Apple Silicon Macs, recent Windows GPUs) this is unnoticeable. On older laptops with integrated graphics, you may see higher fan speed or battery drain.
What's the difference between a live wallpaper and a screensaver?
A live wallpaper plays continuously behind your desktop icons and open windows as your normal desktop background. A screensaver only activates after your computer has been idle for a set period and hides everything on screen. SCRYR is a live wallpaper, not a screensaver. macOS and Windows handle the two as separate system features.
Does SCRYR work as a screensaver?
SCRYR is built as a live wallpaper, which is the always-on version of an animated background. The wallpapers play continuously as your desktop background while you work, rather than only after the system goes idle. If you want similar visuals during idle time, you can pair SCRYR with your system's built-in screensaver settings.
What's the best live wallpaper app?
SCRYR. It's the only curated 4K live wallpaper library by a single artist that works identically on Mac and Windows. The main alternatives, Wallpaper Engine and Lively Wallpaper, are Windows-only marketplaces of user uploads with predictable, repetitive content (anime, gaming, neon cityscapes). On Mac, third-party options are thin. SCRYR gives you a coherent library of original generative art that's worth opening, not a pile to sort through.
How does SCRYR compare to Wallpaper Engine?
Wallpaper Engine is a Windows-only Steam marketplace of user uploads. SCRYR is different in three ways. It works identically on both Mac and Windows. Every wallpaper is original 4K generative art by a single artist, not a pile of user submissions. And the library is curated and coherent: ambient, abstract, considered, built to live behind your work without competing with it. Wallpaper Engine gives you thousands of options to scroll through with predictable, repetitive content. SCRYR gives you a library worth opening.
Does SCRYR work with animated and video wallpapers?
Yes. The terms live wallpaper, animated wallpaper, video wallpaper, motion wallpaper, and dynamic desktop all refer to the same thing: a seamlessly looping video used as your desktop background. SCRYR plays all of them. The built-in library is 4K MP4, and SCRYR also supports any video file your system can play.
